So, apart from anything else, the Chigorin may have an important instructive function. Cefense opening is usually not played among chess grandmasters, only grandmaster Alexander Morozevich plays it and has written a book about it.
This article uses algebraic notation to describe chess moves. This does not mean the the opening is unsound. This is clearly the case with the Chigorin defense played by what is considered the father of Russian’s chess Mikhail Chigorin. His main and only concern is to finish his development as quickly as possible and hopefully start an attack against the White King whether it is hiding on the King’s side, Queen’s side or the center.

Williams over and over tries to teach us gambit play. But we are going a little off topic here: Generally I tend to give more credit to those who actually play the opening, and suffer with chigprin, since all openings are source of sufferings before mastering them, and even after!
In the beginning of the DVD, Williams mentioned the one who has reinvigorated such old opening used over years ago: An uncommonly played defense to the Queen’s Gambitit begins with the moves:. Although opening assessments change as improvements are found for each side, the Chigorin is generally considered playable for Black and it is useful as a surprise weapon against defesne Queen’s Gambit. I will certainly add it to my repertoire, and play it in tournaments. S G Ruth vs W Napier.

Because the Chigorin is an unusual defense, the theory of this opening is not as well developed as that for more popular openings.
Alexander Morozevich is perhaps the only modern grandmaster who regularly plays the Chigorin Defense, although in the s, Vasily Smyslov did employ the opening against Chigorij Kasparov. It’s amazing that the Chigorin was “invented” by Chigorin who was then basically the only one to play it until the s.
Smyslov could trot this baby out against the likes of Portisch, Gligoric and Kasparov and make it stick. I’m sure it doesn’t.
