De Bellis Antiquitatis – Wargames Rules for Ancient and Medieval Battles (Version 2.2)
I got into a discussion re: Personally, I felt solid Bow may be under powered vs solid foot in the DBx system. After making any such desired moves, the players then conduct combat, both ranged and close combat, adjudicated in the order specified by the active player.
One can disagree without being disagreeable. To resolve combat, each player throws one dice and adds modifiers for both troop type and battlefield situation such as being outflanked or up hill.
Further, you completely misunderstand DBA’s design philosophy.
It’s probably the best synthesis of combined arms tactics for ancient and medieval battle. I agree that many details about the coordination of different arms is not entirely clear.
What may have got lost amongst the “I have more books than you” posturing, is that side support in DBA 3 is only available against foot. I tend to be a heretic who asks inconvenient questions. Well, Tom is a friend and fine lawyer, but my money is on the guys making a full time living reading those primary sources. I haven’t gone into exhaustive investigation, but there does not seem to be that much difference between the two sets. The De Bellis Societatis Antiquorum ruleset was designed as a “tonic for the jaded” with the goal of providing a fun, fast and challenging game and as an alternative to the WRG series of ancients rules.

The Mithridatic phalanx beat Alexander’s Macedonians! And when they did so their front was protected by a combination of natural terrain obstacles or stakes pounded into the ground. He aimed for area effect with his fellow archers in massed volleys, especially during the enemy’s advance to contact. Would they be destroyed if the element they evaded behind was destroyed? So as they independent third party looking at two models of primary sources, that of DBA antiquitattis and that of professionals such as Jones and Rogers, who in my opinion is more likely to be right?
Home Back to Results. And yes, I get the idea that all elements provide a form of side support. May have flaws such as tears, pen marks or highlighting, large creases, stains, marks, a loose map, etc.
Tom is saying that his analysis and implementation of that analysis in the DBA context is correct while those of professional historians such as Jones and Rogers are wrong! All members in good standing are free to post here. The only thing that doesn’t make sense and which nobody ahtiquitatis addressed nor will they is why Blades are granted a SPECIAL form of side support for Bows while Spears and Pikes do not receive that special side support benefit. It was hashed out quite thoroughly. The reality is that no one knows the exact formations used by the English. And we have both read primary and secondary sources from the period. The irony is that Barker and I share a common background. Antiquitatjs is right, English dismounted knights were flanked by bows. Every item in our inventory has been inspected, very strictly graded, and bagged for its protection.

Unable to load more. But if you must know, when we moved from DC to Atlanta we literally had more weight in books than furniture, and that’s for a 4-bedroom home. Our mutual interests in historical games makes total sense! You have them “fight” and if they get a negative they get to evade. The brunt of the “French” really Italien mounted charge fell on the English men at arms and seems to have blown right through them. Happy Gaming to all.
Zntiquitatis they fought defensively and fairly statically at antiquitaris tactical level.
