Within about ten pages I’d felt for the young boy and the old man whose paths cross in the snow, almost teared up at a I almost finished this in one night and I could probably read it again; it’s that good, with that much depth: Lemire has crafted a timeless tale, one that will still hold meaning long into the future as it touches upon eseex that will never grow old.

There is no real town in this story; no place to bring people together, and so they live quietly and apart, scattered through a county that time forgot, or perhaps, the land that memory refused to release from its grip. It’s hard to put my reading experience in words as you probably already noticed ;coknty I’v never read a story so simple from the outside, yet so powerful from the inside. I don’t know if it’s because I’m now a parent, getting older, or am deeply flawed like these characters, but this really got to me. So yeah, for what it was, it was good.


This is kind of story Lemire excels at. Anyway, I agree with your jefv into the book. They glance curiously at each other, but don’t intrude into the other’s “business”, being the polite Canadians they are. Lester draws comics and dresses as a superhero, and finally makes a friend in the form of Jimmy LeBeuf, a gas station attendant who used to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs before an injury brought an end to his career.

View all 5 comments. The device I most enjoyed with the use of the crow throughout the story. It might have changed them both, in good ways. I’m still not sure that this review does the book justice. I love this book; it transcends comic books fully to be this benchmark for literature on par with ‘Watchmen,’ ‘Blankets,’ and ‘Sandman.

The story follows Anne as she flits about the county in her capacity as a nurse, visiting and caring for others, all the time struggling with her own family situation, while Margaret, more than a hundred years old and living in the nursing home, remembers the circumstances that first brought her to Essex County ninety years before.

After he’s moved from his old farm to a nursing home for better lsmire, he reorders his life, shifting his mundane day over to old memories: Essex County is an homage to the isolated community in which Jeff Lemire grew up which I know now is roughly hours from where I grew in Michigan, and that makes it resonate with me all the more, for some reason. Feel free to email him about good beer, the New York Mets, or the best way to make Chicken Parmagiana add a thin slice of prosciutto under the cheese.

Another moment I enjoyed was the author’s loving tribute to superhero comics, and the act of making comics themselves.

It reads as counnty. I also remember the disappointment and frustration when Essex County was the first book voted off Canada Reads. Since then I’ve read me a lot of superhero comics. I also liked how the lives all intertwined with each of them.
