I found it intense; idea follows idea in quick succession so that just when you think you have read something profound yet another profundity follows on its heels. Lawrence Buell’s The Future of Environmental Criticism covers much of the same material but is a stronger effort.

Wordy, as most literary thoery is by necessity, but still readable. If you’re just starting out in this field and you want a book that will summarize ecocriticism, then this is the book for you. Written from a more scientific perspective, the primer on Ecocriticism covers several key intersections between nature and the humanities while exposing the typical understandings of nature as mere property of humans or the over-mystified readings of nature that don’t do much for improving our world.

But I would eccoriticism this one to anyone interested in this exciting, emergent field. It starts by providing a brief account of the various political and philosophical orientations within the broad spectrum of environmentalism.

There are a lot of literary examples that obscure the more important concepts. As natural resources become scarce, entrepreneurs find ecocriticsm or create efficiencies that ameliorate the issue.

Half the time it felt like reading a bunch of synopses more than a guide to ecocriticism in general and it’s sometimes hard to tell whether he’s explaining someone’s opinion on it or if it’s a more generally accepted method.

The next three chapters Pastoral, Wilderness, and Apocalypse trace these key tropes throughout the history of ecocriticism. He wanders off course so many times that you end up forgetting what this paragraf was even about and it seems he himself forgets as well.

I definitely have a better appreciation for the different “faces” of “green” after reading it.

The book proceeds to frame the analysis into 6 ecocritical tropes: He includes garrarf interdisciplinary hit parade of scholars and writers whose contributions to ecological thought are unquestioned including Raymond Williams, William Cronon, and Bill McKibben. This little book in the literal sense is a comprehensive guide to navigating ecocritical theory.

I have to say though that, as a teacher of both literature and geography with a focus on sustainable developmentI found this work to be the perfect crossover between my two otherwise disparate subjects, and made me feel a little less schizophrenic as a teacher than normal Straightforward and clear introduction to the field that is not overly celebratory.

It did end a bit abruptly though and without much of a conclusion Paperbackpages.
